Work

Hey. I'm Courtney Zalewski. I design things.

I'm currently a partner at Midnight, a product design studio based in Brooklyn.
We're dedicated to helping companies build awesome products.

Pager

Director of UX

Pager is an on-demand healthcare service that provides you with a simple way to ask questions, get answers and receive immediate attention from board-certified doctors and nurses directly in your own home or office. As Director of UX I was responsible for overseeing the entire design process from user flows to polished designs. On top of enhancing the visual design, a bulk of my effort was spent around designing chat-centric solutions for patients, nurses and doctors to have seamless and meaningful interactions.

Glimpse

LEAD PRODUCT DESIGNER

Glimpse was an iOS dating app for creatives. Using Instagram we created a visual profile to help show off your interests through photos and used the meta-data to make smart introductions to people that see the world like you. Without having to say a word our users were able to clearly show off their sense of humor, where they travel, and things they care about.

Glimpse was featured in: Fast Company, Refinery 29, Forbes, Vogue, Mashable + more.

SuicideGirls

Vp design

SuicideGirls has been the premier alt community on the internet since 2001. For over 10 years, I have been leading and managing the design and development for the SuicideGirls brand. Throughout my time, I have managed a team of 5 developers and 2 designers. Aside from product management, my other responsibilities include designing user flows, user and admin interfaces, supplying our dev team with style guides, direction and design audits to ensure pixel perfect design, as well as quality assurance. I am also responsible for the print side of the company, where I oversee the creation of hardcover books and merchandise.

In 2013, I led a full site redesign from the ground up.

SuicideGirls has over 5 Million unique visitors a month and over 15 Million active social reach.

Let's Date

CO-FOUNDER, DESIGN LEAD

Let’s Date was a mobile dating app for iOS. I was responsible for the brand identity, UI and UX design. Starting from initial paper sketches, I worked closely with my partners to create a fun, simple and beautiful mobile only solution to meeting new people. In January 2013 we had set up nearly 25,000 real world dates, with 130,000 messages being sent and 1 million “Let’s Date”/”No Thanks” actions taken every day.

Let's Date was acquired by Science, Inc. in 2013

Coilhouse

Creative Director

Coilhouse is a biannual alternative art, culture and lifestyle magazine. As Creative Director I was responsible for the quality and look of the brand. The design, which included custom type treatments and layouts, changed drastically from issue to issue depending on its theme.

"I CLEARLY RECALL READING RE/SEARCH, MONDO 2000 AND BOINGBOING
WAY BACK IN THE OLD DAYS, AND WHEN I READ COILHOUSE,
I GET THE SAME JOYFUL MAGICAL FEELING.

I WISH I COULD LIVE IN THE WORLD THAT I SEE WHENEVER I OPEN A NEW ISSUE OF COILHOUSE."

- WIL WHEATON, AUTHOR AND ACTOR

"THERE ARE THREE THINGS SITTING BY MY BED -
MOBY DICK, A FEW OF MY FAVORITE COMICS, AND COILHOUSE.

IT'S AN OBJECT OF BEAUTY, IT'S WONDERFUL. I THINK IT'S SMART, IT DOESN'T CONDESCEND. IT'S MY FAVORITE MAGAZINE IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW, AND I READ A LOT OF MAGAZINES.

IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE ANYTHING ELSE OUT THERE."

- CLIVE BARKER, AUTHOR, FILM DIRECTOR, VISUAL ARTIST

“CONSISTENTLY ASTOUNDING DESIGN. THE SINGLE MOST BEAUTIFUL MAGAZINE I HAVE SEEN IN YEARS.”

- RICHARD TAYLOR, CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF WETA WORKSHOP

“COILHOUSE WAS A REALLY GLORIOUS AND GROUNDBREAKING THING, AND WILL REMAIN SO. A LOVELY AND EXTRAORDINARY WORK OF ART. AND OF LOVE.”

– WILLIAM GIBSON, AUTHOR

“Y’KNOW HOW, SOME MAGAZINES, YOU BUY ‘EM, THEN TOSS ‘EM RIGHT WHEN YOU’RE DONE READING THEM — BUT OTHERS, YOU STICK ON YOUR BOOKSHELF AND KEEP ‘EM FOREVER? COILHOUSE IS A KEEPER.”

– XENI JARDIN, boingboing

“ONE OF THE MOST STUNNING, SUBVERSIVE MAGAZINES.”

- MOLLY CRABAPPLE
